Dans un courriel envoyé à ses supporteurs, le représentant démocrate de Floride Alan Grayson publie la transcription d'une entrevue qu'il a accordée à MSNBC et où il compare le Tea Party au Ku Klux Klan, l'organisation suprémaciste blanche. «À ce moment-ci, le Tea Party n'est pas plus populaire que le KKK», dit-il.
Le courriel est accompagné d'une illustration montrant une croix enflammée devant laquelle se tiennent deux Klansmen. Cette croix compose le premier T de Tea Party. Critiqué pour sa comparaison, Grayson a déclaré : «Si le chapeau vous fait, mettez-le donc.»
Selon lui, les militants du Tea Party ont souvent utilisé des expressions ou des images racistes pour attaquer Barack Obama. Je cite dans le texte le représentant de Floride, dont le courriel avait pour but d'amasser de l'argent auprès de ses supporteurs :
"Regarding the image that the campaign circulated, members of the Tea Party have engaged in relentless racist attacks against our African-American president. For example, when the president visited my home of Orlando, Tea Party protesters shouted 'Kenyan Go Home.' Other examples include Tea Party chants of 'Bye Bye Blackbird' and Tea Party posters saying 'Obama's plan: White Slavery ..."
"One could go on and on, because there is overwhelming evidence that the Tea Party is the home of bigotry and discrimination in America today, just as the KKK was for an earlier generation,"
