L'animateur de Fox News on Sunday Chris Wallace, faisant allusion aux déclarations controversées de la représentante républicaine du Minnesota Michele Bachmann, lui a posé ce matin une question à laquelle aucun candidat à la présidence n'avait eu à répondre avant elle : «Êtes-vous fêlée?»
«Ce serait insultant de dire quelque chose comme ça», a-t-elle répondu en rappelant sa feuille de route professionnelle et législative. «Bien sûr, une personne doit choisir ses mots avec soin. Et j'ai désormais l'occasion de m'exprimer clairement.»
Bachmann a affirmé que les résultats du premier sondage de la saison électorale réalisé auprès des électeurs républicains d'Iowa prouvaient qu'elle était une candidate «sérieuse». Selon ce baromètre, la représentante tire de l'arrière d'un seul point sur Mitt Romney, meneur avec 23% d'appuis dans l'État où aura lieu le premier test de la course à l'investiture républicaine pour l'élection présidentielle de 2012. L'ex-homme d'affaires Herman Cain arrive au troisième rang avec 10% d'appuis, suivi de Newt Gingrich (7%), Ron Paul (7%), Tim Pawlenty (6%), Rick Santorum (4%) et Jon Huntsman (2%).
Cela étant, le journaliste Matt Taibbi semble être convaincu que Michele Bachmann est bel et bien fêlée. Je cite un extrait dans le texte du portrait qu'il lui consacre dans le numéro courant du magazine Rolling Stone :

"It's your state that fired the shot that was heard around the world!" she gushed. "You are the state of Lexington and Concord, you started the battle for liberty right here in your backyard."
