Jack Shafer, critique des médias au magazine électronique Slate, se demande pourquoi aucun quotidien sérieux n'a traité du dernier scoop du National Enquirer, un journal à sensation, à propos de la visite nocturne qu'a rendue John Edwards lundi à la mère de «son» enfant illégitime dans un hôtel de Beverly Hills. La mère de l'enfant, Rielle Hunter, est une ancienne employée d'Edwards. Celui-ci a cependant nié en décembre dernier être le père.
Après sa rencontre avec Hunter, Edwards est tombé sur des journalistes du National Enquirer, qui lui ont demandé ce qu'il faisait là. L'ancien candidat présidentiel aurait refusé de répondre à cette question, préférant aller se réfugier dans une toilette de l'hôtel. Je cite un extrait de la chronique de Shafer dans le texte :
If Edwards had no affair and fathered no love child, it should be easy to erase the hypocrisy charge, and the press owes him that, pronto. If we give Edwards the benefit of the doubt, which he deserves, visiting the woman who recently gave birth to the out-of-wedlock child of a married campaign aide is completely OK. But meeting her at a Beverly Hills hotel in the early hours of the morning and running from tabloid reporters when approached and hiding in a hotel bathroom for 15 minutes, as the Enquirer reports Edwards did, is not completely OK. Not if he wants to avoid the hypocrite label.
So why hasn't the press commented on the story yet?
