Dans un texte publié hier sur sa page Facebook, Sarah Palin a accusé Barack Obama et son équipe électorale d'avoir dénaturé ses propos dans une pub exploitant l'obsession d'une certaine droite américaine autour de l'accolade donnée par le futur président des États-Unis au professeur de droit Derrick Bell lors d'une manifestation sur le campus de Harvard en 1991, un soi-disant scandale dont j'ai parlé dans ce billet.
Les propos de Palin cités dans la pub démocrate sont en fait des extraits d'une entrevue accordée la semaine dernière à l'animateur de Fox News Sean Hannity et portant notamment sur la fameuse accolade. Le site TPM affirme dans ce billet que la portion de l'entrevue où l'ancienne colistière de John McCain fait allusion à la Guerre de Sécession est probablement pire encore que les extraits inclus dans la pub démocrate, dont l'objectif est de collecter des fonds pour la campagne de réélection du président.
Je cite dans le texte cet extrait où Palin accuse Obama de vouloir ramener aux États-Unis une situation semblable à l'esclavage :
He is bringing us back to days, you can hearken back to days before the Civil War, when unfortunately too many Americans mistakenly believed that not all men were created equal. And it was the Civil War that began the codification of the truth that here in America, yes we are equal, and we all have equal opportunities, not based on the color of your skin, you have equal opportunity to work hard and to succeed and to embrace God-given opportunities to develop resources and work extremely hard and as I say, to succeed. Now, it has taken all these years for many Americans to understand the gravity of that mistake that took place before the Civil War and why the Civil War had to really start changing America. What Barack Obama seems to want to do is go back to before those days when we were in different classes based on income, based on color of skin. Why are we allowing our country to move backwards instead of moving forward with that understanding that as our charters of liberty spell out for us, we are all created equally?
Selon Palin, Obama a choisi de dénaturer ses propos pour détourner l'attention des Américains non seulement de son «radicalisme» mais également de l'échec de ses politiques en matière d'énergie, de santé et de protection de la liberté de religion, entre autres.
